After finishing Step-by-Step, the children will be ready for their first chapter book, Pals. Children will be introduced to the elements of a chapter book such as the table of contents, chapter titles, and the concept that the narrative continues in each chapter. They will also learn to attend to punctuation in connected text. In addition, the concepts of multiple meaning words and pronoun referents are introduced in the first reader.  Even with these simple stories, teachers can lay the groundwork for several types of text structure.
